IGI, GIA & HRD Explained

IGI, GIA, and HRD are all credible diamond certification laboratories using the same 4Cs grading framework. GIA is the most widely recognized globally and perceived as the most conservative grader. IGI is the dominant lab for lab-grown diamonds. HRD is the leading European certification body, particularly prevalent in Belgium and the EU. All three clearly disclose lab-grown origin on reports — the key is knowing how to read and verify the certificate you receive.

Quick Answer: IGI vs GIA vs HRD

  • IGI — dominant for lab-grown diamonds, faster turnaround, same 4Cs standards, widely accepted by retailers and insurers. All DEEVE lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified.
  • GIA — most recognized globally, most conservative grading, slight price premium, preferred for high-value natural diamonds
  • HRD — leading European lab (Antwerp), same 4Cs standards, widely accepted in Belgium, Netherlands, and EU markets
  • All three use the same D-Z color scale and FL-I3 clarity scale — grades can vary by 1 between labs
  • Verify any certificate on the lab's official website using the report number before purchasing

✅ Choose IGI If…

You're buying a lab-grown diamond. IGI is the dominant certification lab for lab-grown stones, widely accepted by retailers and insurers. All DEEVE lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified. Faster turnaround, same 4Cs standards.

🏅 Choose GIA If…

You're buying a high-value natural diamond and want the most globally recognized certification. GIA's conservative grading means a G/VS2 from GIA is reliably a G/VS2. Slight price premium reflects market confidence.

🇪🇺 Choose HRD If…

You're purchasing in European markets or want a certificate widely recognized in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the EU. HRD applies the same 4Cs standards and is the leading lab in the Antwerp diamond trade.

IGI Certificates: The Standard for Lab-Grown Diamonds

The International Gemological Institute (IGI), founded in 1975 and headquartered in Antwerp, is the world's leading certification body for lab-grown diamonds. IGI applies the full 4Cs grading framework — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight — and additionally discloses the growth method (CVD or HPHT) and any post-growth treatments on every report.

All DEEVE lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified. Each certificate includes a unique report number that is laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle and verifiable online at igi.org.

What's on an IGI Certificate

Report Number

Unique identifier. Laser-inscribed on the girdle. Use to verify at igi.org.

Shape & Cutting Style

Diamond outline (round, oval, cushion, etc.) and facet arrangement.

Measurements

Dimensions in mm (length × width × depth).

Carat Weight

Weight to the nearest 0.01 carat on calibrated scales.

Color Grade (D–Z)

D = colorless. G–J = near-colorless (best value). Grades can vary ±1 between labs.

Clarity Grade (FL–I3)

FL/IF: flawless. VS1/VS2: eye-clean (best value). SI1/SI2: slightly included.

Cut Grade

Ideal, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. Always choose Ideal or Excellent.

Growth Method

CVD or HPHT — disclosed on all IGI lab-grown reports. See our CVD vs HPHT guide.

GIA Reports: The Global Standard for Natural Diamonds

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), founded in 1931, created the modern 4Cs grading system and remains the most widely recognized certification standard globally. GIA operates as a nonprofit educational institution and is perceived as the most conservative and consistent grader — particularly for high-value natural diamonds.

GIA also certifies lab-grown diamonds, applying identical 4Cs standards and clearly marking stones as "Laboratory-Grown" on reports. GIA reports are verifiable at gia.edu.

GIA vs IGI: Key Differences

  • Grading strictness: GIA is perceived as more conservative — a G/VS2 from GIA may grade as F/VS1 at IGI for the same stone
  • Turnaround: GIA typically takes 2–4 weeks vs IGI's 1–2 weeks
  • Cut grades: GIA uses Excellent–Poor; IGI adds an "Ideal" grade above Excellent
  • Market position: GIA dominates natural diamond markets; IGI dominates lab-grown
  • Price premium: GIA-certified stones often command a slight premium reflecting market confidence

HRD Certificates: Europe's Leading Diamond Lab

HRD Antwerp (Hoge Raad voor Diamant), founded in 1973, is the leading gemological laboratory in Europe and the official certification body of the Antwerp diamond trade. HRD applies the same 4Cs grading standards as GIA and IGI and is widely accepted in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and broader EU markets.

HRD certifies both natural and lab-grown diamonds. Reports are verifiable at hrdantwerp.com. For buyers in European markets or purchasing from European retailers, HRD certification carries the same weight as IGI or GIA.

GIA vs HRD: Key Differences

  • Geographic strength: GIA is dominant in North America and Asia; HRD is dominant in Europe
  • Grading consistency: Both are respected; GIA is perceived as slightly more conservative
  • Lab-grown: Both certify lab-grown diamonds with full 4Cs and growth method disclosure
  • Turnaround: HRD typically 1–2 weeks, comparable to IGI

How to Read a Diamond Certificate: Key Fields

🔢 Report Number

Unique identifier. Should match the laser inscription on the diamond's girdle. Verify on the lab's website before purchasing.

🔵 Color Grade (D–Z)

D–F: colorless. G–J: near-colorless (best value). K+: noticeable color. Grades can vary ±1 between labs.

🔍 Clarity Grade (FL–I3)

FL/IF: flawless. VVS1/VVS2: very very slightly included. VS1/VS2: eye-clean (best value). SI1/SI2: slightly included. I1–I3: visible inclusions.

✂️ Cut Grade

For round brilliants: Excellent/Ideal is the top grade. Cut is the most important factor for brilliance. Always choose Excellent or Ideal.

✨ Polish & Symmetry

Surface finish and facet alignment. Both should be Excellent or Very Good for maximum light performance.

💡 Fluorescence

Strength of glow under UV light. None to Very Strong. Disclosed on all reports. Strong blue fluorescence can make lower-color diamonds appear whiter in sunlight.

3 Steps to Verify Any Diamond Certificate

Step 1: Check the report number online

Go to the lab's official website (igi.org, gia.edu, or hrdantwerp.com). Enter the report number. Confirm the online data matches the physical certificate exactly.

Step 2: Match the laser inscription

Under 10× magnification, the report number should be laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle. If the numbers don't match, the certificate may not belong to that stone.

Step 3: Confirm lab-grown disclosure

For lab-grown diamonds, the report must clearly state "Laboratory-Grown" and the growth method (CVD or HPHT). Any post-growth treatments must also be disclosed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GIA certification better than IGI for lab-grown diamonds?

GIA and IGI both provide credible certification for lab-grown diamonds using the same 4Cs grading standards. GIA is generally perceived as more conservative in grading. IGI has become the dominant standard in lab-grown diamond markets and often offers faster turnaround. For lab-grown purchases, IGI is the industry standard — all DEEVE lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified.

Can two labs give different grades to the same diamond?

Yes. Color and clarity grading involve human judgment of characteristics that exist on a continuum. The same diamond submitted to different laboratories can receive grades that differ by one or occasionally two grades. This reflects the inherent subjectivity of grading rather than laboratory error.

What does laser inscription on a diamond mean?

A microscopic engraving on the diamond's girdle (outer edge) that includes the certification report number. Only visible under 10× magnification. It permanently links the physical diamond to its grading report, enabling verification and identification.

Do all certified diamonds come with a physical certificate?

Most diamonds certified by major laboratories receive a physical printed report, though some smaller diamonds may receive digital reports only. All major laboratories maintain online databases where reports can be verified using the report number.
