The Kimberley Process & Its Limitations
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) was established in 2003 to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the mainstream market. While well-intentioned, it has significant limitations: a narrow definition of "conflict diamonds" that excludes many human rights abuses; no coverage of labour rights, environmental damage, or community displacement; enforcement challenges and documented cases of non-compliance; and once diamonds enter the supply chain, traceability becomes difficult.
