Two carats hang from a post no thicker than a pin, and a hole through a piece of skin carries all of it. This is the part of a stud nobody sells. A hoop closes on itself and spreads its load around the ring; a stud puts everything on one post, with nothing behind the lobe except the back.

So the back is the working component at this weight, not a fitting. A push back holds by friction against a notched post, and friction is a consumable — it softens over years of being pushed on and pulled off, and that, rather than a prong letting go, is how studs are actually lost. The maintenance takes seconds and almost nobody does it: pinch the back gently closed every few months, and replace it once it stops resisting the pull.
