A 6.00mm solid Figaro chain necklace in 14K yellow or white gold, about 21.9 g at 20 inches. This is not a first chain. It is what somebody buys once the fine chains are already in the drawer and the question has stopped being what to layer and turned into what to wear on its own. The numbers say the same thing: 21.9 grams at 20 inches, 24 grams at 22, 26.2 grams at 24.

Weight changes how a chain hangs and not only how it feels. A heavy chain pulls its own curve flatter, hanging lower and straighter than a light one of identical length, so at 6.00mm the elongated links line up almost vertically down the chest instead of meandering across it.

A Figaro alternates short round links with a longer oval link, most often three short to one long, so the chain keeps a steady rhythm along its length.
