The corners of an emerald cut are cropped for a structural reason before an aesthetic one. A sharp ninety-degree corner on a step-cut crystal is the thinnest and least supported point on the stone, and it is exactly where a knock lands. Cutting those four corners away turns a rectangle into an eight-sided outline and removes the only part of it that was fragile.

The corner facets then earn their place. They sit at an angle to the four long sides, so they gather light the parallel steps cannot reach, and they are the first thing to brighten as the hand moves. On a well-made stone the corners flicker while the body of the diamond holds steady.

All of that depends on the facet junctions being dead straight. A step cut is a set of long ruled lines, and the eye finds a wavering line at once where it would never notice an imperfect kite facet on a brilliant. Polish and symmetry are both graded Excellent on this 1.50 carat stone, which is what those two marks are actually buying on a shape with nowhere to hide.
