Take the middle out of a disc and you change what it does. A solid disc has one face and lies on the skin like a plate. An open circle has an inner edge as well as an outer one and shows the background through its middle, so it reads as a drawn line rather than a covered area.

Thirty-two round diamonds are pavé-set around that band at 0.30 carat total weight. Because the band turns through a full circle, no two stones face the same way: the ones at the top point up, the ones at the sides point sideways, and only a few are ever aimed at the person in front of you. That is the trade a circular pavé piece makes. It never flashes all at once, and it never goes dark either, because some stone on the ring is always in the light.

A circle is also the only pendant that cannot hang crookedly. Every rotation looks like every other one, so it never needs straightening at a mirror the way a bar or a letter or a cross does. That is why circles get worn by people who would rather not think about their jewelry again once it is on.
