Even spacing is easy to draw and easy to make. Scatter is the difficult one, because the eye is very good at detecting near-regularity and reads it as an error rather than as a pattern. An irregular run has to be irregular enough to be unmistakably intentional, a judgment made bead by bead rather than set once and repeated.

At 1mm the chain is barely there. Beyond a few feet it stops resolving as a chain at all, and what you see is a line of small gold beads with a single pearl among them, apparently floating on the skin with nothing holding them up. The illusion is the reason the chain is drawn this fine. Any wider and the beads become decoration applied to a necklace instead of objects sitting on their own.

The pearl is the one soft surface in the piece. Everything else is high-polished gold throwing a hard bright point of light, while nacre hands back a broad diffuse glow, so the pearl reads as depth against all that glitter. It is also the one material here with a chemistry worth knowing. Nacre is calcium carbonate, and calcium carbonate dissolves in acid, which is why perfume and hairspray do permanent damage to a pearl and nothing at all to the gold beside it. Put the necklace on last and take it off first.
