A 2.40mm round cable link chain necklace in solid 14K yellow or white gold, about 5.7 g at 18 inches. Two inches at the neckline is a larger difference than it sounds. This comes in 16, 18 and 20 inches: the first sits above the collarbone, the second on it, the third just below and inside an open shirt. Same chain, three quite different necklaces.

The round cable link is the oldest arrangement in chainmaking and still the soundest. Every link is identical and every one sits at a right angle to its neighbor, so load is shared evenly and no weak point is built into the repeat. It is also the chain a goldsmith can shorten, lengthen or repair without the join being findable afterward.

At 2.40mm it is a pendant chain first. A bail wants a chain a little narrower than its own opening so the pendant can swing and settle square, and this width clears most of them while still being substantial enough to wear with nothing on it at all. Weights run 5.1 grams to 6.3 grams with the length.
