A 1.50mm fine paperclip chain necklace in solid 18K yellow or white gold, about 2.2 g at 18 inches in yellow gold. A curve resists bending. A straight run does not, and that is the quiet structural problem in a paperclip link, whose long sides are unsupported spans of wire. The finer the chain, the more that matters, which is why at 1.50mm the gold has to be real all the way through rather than a wall wrapped around a hollow.

18K is three-quarters gold, so the yellow runs deeper and the white starts from a brighter base than 14K does. It is also softer, which makes this the most delicate combination in the case: a high-karat alloy drawn thin. Put it on carefully and take it off the same way, and it will outlast the person who tells you to.

Two grams over 16 inches is nothing at all on the neck. Sixteen inches sits at the base of the throat, high enough to stay in view in an open collar and short enough to layer above longer chains without the two crossing and fighting each other.

A paperclip chain is made of long, flat oval links, so it reads as a row of open rectangles rather than a dense line. Width changes its character more than in most styles: a fine paperclip is a light everyday chain, a wide one is a statement on its own, and the long links lie flat beside other chains when layered. Compare paperclips by width first, then by gram weight at the same length.
