The diamonds along this band are not all one size. They step down from the halo toward the back of the shank, and the graduation is why the design holds together. A band of identical stones pulls the eye evenly along its whole length, which flattens a ring; graduated stones give the row a direction, and the direction points at the center.

Graduation also lets the metal taper. A shank that narrows toward the palm is more comfortable through a long day, keeps weight off the underside of the finger, and is easier to size later. Matching stones would force the band to hold one width the whole way around.
