Stand a bar pendant upright and it stops having to balance. A vertical bar hangs on the same line the chain does, so gravity holds it straight with no help from the bail, and that is what allows this one to be 0.12 inches wide and 1.00 inch tall. The same proportion lying sideways would need a far better engineered mount to stay level.

Round diamonds run down the face at 0.05 carat total weight, held in prongs. At 0.12 inches the bar is barely wider than the stones it carries, so the gold reads as a frame around a line of light rather than a background behind it.
