Blue and White Topaz Dancing Drop Necklace in 14K Yellow Gold

A stone set solid only sparkles when you move. A stone on a pivot keeps sparkling after you have stopped. That is the mechanism behind a dancing setting: the gem is mounted so it can rock freely inside its housing, and ordinary movement, breathing included, keeps changing its angle to whatever light is in the room. Topaz is a good stone to hang that way. It is an 8 on the Mohs scale, harder than quartz and most of what a necklace meets in a day, so a stone swinging against gold and skin keeps its polish. It has one weakness worth naming: perfect cleavage in a single direction, which means it takes a sharp knock less well than its hardness suggests. A drop that is free to move absorbs far less of that than a stone locked rigidly into a ring.

Using blue and white together is a structural decision more than a decorative one. Colorless topaz returns white light and does the job a diamond accent would do. Blue topaz absorbs part of the spectrum and hands back color, which reads darker and visually heavier at the same size.
