A 13.8mm oval mariner link necklace in solid 14K yellow gold, about 31.4 g at 18.5 inches. The bar across the middle of each link is borrowed from ship's chain, where it is called a stud and stops the link squeezing shut under load. In gold it does something more immediately useful: it prevents each link folding into the next, so a mariner lies flat and stays flat no matter how wide it gets.

This one gets very wide. At 13.8mm and 31.4 grams it is a substantial chain, and the studded geometry is the reason that much metal can hang around a neck without turning into an unmanageable rope. High polish on faces this broad makes every link a separate reflector.
