A halo is arithmetic before it is ornament. The shank splits as it approaches the head, so the pave carries on along two arcs instead of one line, and the space opened by the split keeps the ring from looking solid through the middle.

The band stays at 2.4mm. That restraint is what keeps the design from turning bulky, because the head of a halo ring is already wide and a broad shank underneath it would make the whole thing read as one mass rather than a bright face on a fine band.
