A 1.12 cttw princess-cut split shank diamond engagement ring in solid 14K white gold, its natural diamonds led by a 0.97 ct center stone, I (near-colorless) in color and I1 (included) in clarity. Round stones cannot sit flush against each other. Two circles touch at a single point and leave a gap on either side that has to be filled with metal. Squares have no such problem, and that is the reason for the 32 princess-cut diamonds along this band: set corner to corner, they make a continuous ribbon of light with almost no metal interrupting it.

The princess cut exists because of the shape of diamond rough. A rough octahedron sawn through the middle yields two square-based pyramids, and a square brilliant cut from one of them keeps weight that a round outline would have ground away. It holds brilliant-style faceting under a square footprint. Its corners are the vulnerable part, which is why they are held here in scallop prongs.

The center is a round of at least 0.97 carat in a prong setting on a split shank. The pairing is intentional: a round returns light as a broad scatter, a square as flat planes of flash, and the two effects do not compete for the same job.
