A 1.63 cttw cathedral round diamond engagement ring in solid 14K white gold, its natural diamonds led by a 1.46 ct center stone, I (near-colorless) in color and I1 (included) in clarity. Nine to one is the ratio that defines this ring: 1.46 carats at the center against 0.16 carat spread over twelve side stones. This is a single-stone ring that has been given a hem, not a diamond band with a stone dropped into it.

At nearly a carat and a half, the face of the center is wide enough that a substantial row beside it would look like an argument. Small stones do something else. They make the transition from band to diamond gradual, so the eye arrives at the middle instead of jumping to it.

The setting is cathedral, the shank rising into arms that brace the head from both sides and hold the stone off the finger. That clearance matters more as a stone gets larger. A big pavilion resting against skin loses the light that should be entering it from below, and a round brilliant depends on that light more than any other cut does.
