A 4.70mm Figaro chain necklace in solid 14K yellow gold, a lighter build at about 4.6 g at 18 inches. A Figaro is a chain with a count in it. Short links run in a group, one elongated link interrupts them, and the sequence repeats the whole way down. That interval is why a Figaro reads as a pattern where a uniform chain reads as material. The eye finds the repeat and follows it.

The long link earns its place practically as well. It is the one opening wide enough to take a pendant bail without crowding the links on either side, so a Figaro carries a pendant more comfortably than an evenly linked chain of the same width, and the pendant hangs square instead of cocked to one side.

How a Figaro chain is patterned

A Figaro alternates short round links with a longer oval link, most often three short to one long, so the chain keeps a steady rhythm along its length.
