Why was gold the first metal humans learned to work?
Because it required nothing they did not already have. Gold occurs in native form as nuggets and flakes, so it needs no smelting to separate it from ore, and it is soft enough to be hammered into sheet at room temperature without annealing. It also does not corrode, so early work survived rather than degrading into unrecognisable oxide. Copper and iron each demanded metallurgical knowledge that took millennia to develop; gold demanded only a stone and patience.
What is granulation, and why was the technique lost?
Granulation is the fusing of tiny gold spheres onto a gold surface without visible solder, producing patterns of granules that appear to sit on the metal unattached. Mesopotamian and later Etruscan smiths achieved it at extraordinary fineness by around 2600 BCE. The method depended on a colloidal joining process whose chemistry was transmitted by demonstration rather than by record, so when the workshops ended the knowledge ended with them. It was not reliably reconstructed until the nineteenth century.
What are the fundamental operations of goldsmithing?
