Nothing on a cushion can chip. Every corner has been rounded away, so there is no point, no knife edge and no thin projection standing out where a door handle or a countertop will eventually find it. The rounded outline also changes what the prongs do. A prong closing over a curve wraps the stone along an arc instead of capping a point, which spreads the load and lets each prong be finer without losing its grip. Less metal ends up sitting on top of the diamond, and more of the crown stays in view.

Where a small stone dissolves into general sparkle, a cushion of this weight lets you see single flashes arrive and leave one at a time, which is a slower and more legible kind of light than a brilliant of the same size produces.
