Gold is dense, and 18K is denser than 14K because there is simply more gold in it. That is why this cable chain weighs 8.9 grams at only 2.60mm wide, and why it hangs with more authority than its width would lead you to expect.

A diamond-cut finish is applied after the chain is assembled. A rotating cutter shaves flat facets into the rounded outer surface of each link, turning plain gold into a faceted reflector without adding anything to it. On a cable the links alternate at right angles, so half the facets face one way and half the other, and the chain scintillates in two planes at once instead of flashing all together.

One thing worth knowing about any diamond-cut chain: the facets are shallow. A hard buffing wheel will round them off and take the sparkle with them. Warm water and a soft brush is the correct maintenance, and any real polishing belongs at a bench that knows what it is looking at.
