A 1.50mm round cable link chain necklace in solid 18K yellow or white gold, about 3.0 g at 18 inches in yellow gold. Karat is a color decision before it is a value one. 18K is three-quarters gold against just under three-fifths for 14K, and that difference shows in the yellow long before it shows on a scale: deeper, warmer, closer to what people picture when they say the word gold.

Held to 1.50mm, that color arrives in the smallest possible dose. This is layering width, the chain you put underneath heavier pieces to give the eye somewhere quiet to land, or wear by itself on days when jewelry is not the point of the outfit. It comes in 16 and 18 inch lengths at 2.7 grams.

Fine chains wear at their friction points, behind the neck and either side of the clasp, and there is nothing wrong with that. Solid gold can be re-polished, and a parted link can be soldered closed and made invisible again. Neither is true of a plated or gold-filled chain.
