An oval is a round brilliant pulled along one axis, and the pull does two jobs at once. The first is spread. The same weight laid over a longer outline presents more surface to the eye, so an oval faces up larger than a compact shape of equal weight while keeping the brilliant faceting that makes a round bright.

The second job is on the hand. The long axis runs with the finger rather than across it, so the eye travels the length of the stone and reads the finger as longer for it. A square or a circle interrupts that line; an oval continues it. This is the advice ovals always come with, usually without the reason attached.

Three carats, grown by CVD and certified by IGI, G–H in color and VS1–VS2 in clarity, polish and symmetry both graded Excellent. It sits in a classic four-prong solitaire on a 1.50mm band, narrow on purpose, so the shank reads as a thin line under the stone and the eye stays on the length it is carrying.
