Fire is a matter of facet size. Dispersion splits white light into its spectrum every time it enters and leaves a diamond, but the eye only sees the separated colors if the facet throwing them is large enough to resolve. Below that threshold the colors recombine and the flash reads white. A cushion begins with fewer and larger facets than a round, and at five carats they are large enough to show spectral color outright.

The result is slow. Where a small brilliant glitters more or less continuously, this stone changes in discrete events, a red flash and then a blue one and then a pause as the hand moves. Under a single hard source — one lamp, a candle — the effect is at its most obvious, which is the light the shape was originally cut for.

At this weight the outline does as much as the faceting. Bowed sides and rounded corners cover the finger in both directions rather than reaching along it, so 5.00 carats sits square on the hand with no point to snag and no axis to align.
