The white on this ring is rhodium, and it behaves differently from the gold underneath it. 14K white gold begins as yellow gold alloyed with pale metals, and it comes out of that faintly warm rather than truly white. A microscopically thin layer of rhodium, a platinum-group metal harder and whiter than anything in the alloy, is plated over the finished piece to give it the cold white a stone-set band wants.

Because it is a plating, it wears, and it wears in predictable places: the underside against the palm, and the flanks where another ring rubs. On an eternity band the top face is largely shielded by the stones themselves, so the edges go first. Replating is an ordinary bench job of an afternoon. It is maintenance rather than damage, and worth doing every few years on a ring that never comes off.

Keeping it white is not vanity. Metal reflects into the stones it holds, and a warm shank lends that warmth to everything sitting in it, which is the last thing you want beneath 5.00 carats graded F-G.

Because the diamonds continue the whole way around, the ring is made to size rather than resized later — so confirm your size before ordering, and note that wider bands wear snug.
