An emerald cut is built from long parallel facets, and everything it does depends on those facets staying long. A round brilliant scatters light through dozens of small ones. A step cut has no scatter mechanism at all; it works as a set of mirrors, throwing broad flashes that switch on and off as the angle changes. Shrink the stone and you shrink the mirrors, which is why small emerald cuts so often look flat.

Scale is the argument for this one. 6.00 carats laid across a 5.6mm band leaves each stone enough length for the effect to hold, so the ring reads as a run of long reflections rather than a sequence of bright dots. From a few feet away it looks less like a row of gems than like polished glass with light moving through it.

The same geometry is why clarity gets stated plainly here. A step cut has an open table with nothing between the eye and the interior of the stone, no sparkle to distract from what is inside. VS2-SI1 is the grade at which nothing reaches an unaided eye across a desk or a room.
